Curcumin-artemisinin combination therapy for malaria.
Artemisinin and curcumin show an additive interaction in killing Plasmodium falciparum in culture. In vivo, 3 oral doses of curcumin following a single injection of alpha,beta-arteether to Plasmodium berghei-infected mice are able to prevent recrudescence due to alpha,beta-arteether monotherapy and ensure almost 100% survival of the animals.

0287 T he traditional, low-cost mainstay drugs for malaria, chloroquine (CQ) and sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP), have a very limited lifetime left in terms of their clinical usefulness. These drugs have been relatively ineffective in Asia for two decades, and rising drug resistance levels have now also rendered them ineffective in many sub-Saharan African countries [1]. Artemisinin drugs, such...

INTRODUCTION The development and spread of Plasmodium falciparum resistance to most commonly used antimalarials remain a major challenge in the control of malaria. Constant monitoring of drug efficacy is an important tool in establishing rational antimalarial drug policies. METHODOLOGY A randomized comparative study was conducted at the Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa, Nigeria between February 2...

متن کاملPrimaquine plus artemisinin combination therapy for reduction of malaria transmission: promise and risk
Reduction of gametocyte transmission from humans to mosquitoes is a key component of malaria elimination. The study by Gonçalves and colleagues provides valuable new data on how the addition of low-dose primaquine to artemether-lumefantrine affects reduction of gametocytemia and transmission of gametocytes to mosquitoes in asymptomatically Plasmodium falciparum-infected children without G6PD de...
